“Let’s Unite for Equality”

Gender inequality negatively affects the access of women, adolescents, and other disadvantaged groups to scientific knowledge, counseling, and healthcare services within the scope of preventive health. It hinders these groups from leading a healthy and quality life.

At the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Summit held in September 2015, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted with the signatures of 193 countries, including Türkiye. As part of this agenda, a total of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aim to ensure that “no one is left behind” throughout the 2015–2030 period—so that no country and no one is excluded from the development process. Through our advocacy and capacity-building efforts, we also support Türkiye’s progress toward achieving the SDGs.

Sexuality education is one of the key elements that shapes the health of a society.
Healthy societies focus on raising individuals who are informed, educated, and sensitive about sexual health, offering a perspective that empowers younger generations.

In this context, we can examine why sexuality education forms the foundation of healthy societies under several main points:

3 Ensure Healthy Lives and Promote Well-Being for All at All Ages

Target 3.1: By 2030, reduce the global maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 100,000 live births.
Target 3.2: By 2030, end preventable deaths of newborns and children under 5 years of age, with all countries aiming to reduce neonatal mortality to at least as low as 12 per 1,000 live births and under-5 mortality to at least as low as 25 per 1,000 live births.
Target 3.3: By 2030, end the epidemics of AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, and neglected tropical diseases and combat hepatitis, water-borne diseases, and other communicable diseases.
Target 3.7: By 2030, ensure universal access to sexual and reproductive healthcare services, including for family planning, information and education, and the integration of reproductive health into national strategies and programs.

5 Achieve Gender Equality and Empower All Women and Girls

5.1 End all forms of discrimination against all women and girls everywhere.
5.2 Eliminate all forms of violence against all women and girls in public and private spheres, including trafficking, sexual and other types of exploitation.
5.3 Eliminate all harmful practices, such as child, early and forced marriage and female genital mutilation.
5.5 Ensure women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision-making in political, economic, and public life.
5.6 Ensure universal access to sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights as agreed in accordance with the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development and the Beijing Platform for Action and the outcome documents of their review conferences.
5.b Enhance the use of enabling technology, in particular information and communications technology, to promote the empowerment of women.
5.c Adopt and strengthen sound policies and enforceable legislation for the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls at all levels.
